On January 9th, 2017 the much talked about rarely seen X Rated cut of Ken Russell’s The Devils will have a special one night only screening at The Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers with Ken’s widow, Lisi Tribble in attendance for a Q&A. Folks, load up the cars or buy your plane tickets now because you don’t want to miss the chance to see this ultra rare screening of a cinematic masterpiece in 35 MM.
Ken Russell is hands down one of the most fearless filmmakers that graced the world of cinema and The Devils out of his entire storied filmography is the film that encompasses Ken and his aura the best. The film has an urban legend legacy after over over forty years of needless censorship due to the unfounded fears of Warner Brothers and the powers that be that are still blocking an uncut release all these years later. The film has been cut to pieces and released in sub par transfers over the years until BFI released a Region 2 DVD four years ago. Thank God for All Region DVD players. The film is a dramatized historical account of the rise and fall of Urbain Grandier, a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest executed for witchcraft following the supposed possessions in Loudun, France. Oliver Reed( at his all time best) plays Grandier in the film and Vanessa Redgrave(in a career defining performance) plays a hunchbacked sexually repressed nun who finds herself inadvertently responsible for the accusations. After reading that synopsis I dare anyone to tell me that they don’t want to see the film.
I can go on and on about the utter brilliance of The Devils and Ken Russell and trust me I’m in good company. Guillermo Del Toro has been one of the most vocal supporters of a uncut release of the film over the years and there is also a Facebook Group ( Free The Devils) that is campaigning for the films uncut release. A 35MM uncut screening with the always enchanting Lissi Tribble doing a Q&A there’s no better way to spend a cold January evening than with the fire and brimstone of The Devils.
