THE VOID is the horror film that’s been the talk of the town as of late and for damn good reason.

Films like THE VOID signify a rare instance these days when the visceral horror has superbly meshed with an emotional tone that touches on life, love, loss and the depths people are willing to go to for loved ones that have departed this world. Mix in some of the best practical FX work of the year and you’ve got a film that will resonate for quite a long while.

The Void

With a dynamic opening scene that disorients the viewer immediately and leaves you wondering what the hell is going on and who these people are, you know from the jump that the filmmakers are not going to let anyone off the hook easily by the time the end credits roll. The writing/directing team of Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski have taken core themes of loss and what lies after and given their own spin on it while still honoring the tales that have come before. The FX in the film pay homage to the films of Lucio Fulci and Clive Barker while still showcasing original elements that will leave viewers in awe with permanent nightmare fuel etched in their brains.

The performances in the film are all top notch and led by Aaron Poole as Daniel Carter and Kenneth Welsh as Dr. Richard Powell. Welsh’s role is one that showcases how an actor can play a genre antagonist character type of role that we’ve all seen before while still adding new depths that strike even the staunchest genre fan as something new and exciting. An aspect where most genre films of late have fallen flat is set design and lighting, rest easy readers as these are two major points of production where the film excels and terrifies. From the triangle symbols throughout the film and design of the subterranean basement to the flare and flashlight lit attack scenes the images are ones that will last long after you turn the light on.
