Actor Cayleb Long Talks ‘The Basement’ with Exclusive Stills

With Conley Entertainment Group’s feature indie horror film ‘The Basement’ set for its World Premiere on 10/7/2017 at Hollywood, California’s Shriekfest Film Festival (which has nominated it for ‘Best Film’), Terror Time sat down with actor Cayleb Long, who portrays lead ‘Craig Owen,’ a man abducted and brutally tortured by a mysterious murderer, to discuss the film.

Co-directed by Brian Conley and Nathan Ives and starring Mischa Barton (‘The Sixth Sense’), Jackson Davis (‘Lonelygirl15’), Cayleb Long, Tracie Thoms (‘Death Proof’), Bailey Anne Borders (‘The Fifth Wave’) and Sarah Nicklin, the plot of ‘The Basement’ (according to the film’s PR) revolves around, “L.A. serial killer The Gemini (Davis), who tortures and ultimately murders his victims in the dungeon-like basement of his San Fernando Valley home.  By the time the movie opens, Gemini has already claimed seven victims, all of whom he has horrifyingly maimed and decapitated with a blowtorch, but Craig Owen (Long), the famed musician who Gemini has chosen for his eighth victim, and Craig’s beautiful wife Kelly (Barton) prove every bit the killer’s equal in the art of psychological warfare, giving rise to one of the more diabolical plot twists in recent memory.”

Actor Long, who is currently prepping his role in the soon-to-shoot feature ‘Interference,’ in which he plays (per his words), “A manipulative pedophile murderer ala Hannibal Lecter with a bit of 1980’s James Spader thrown in for good measure,” said of his role in ‘The Basement,’ “I thought it would be a really interesting challenge to focus on the circumstantial dynamic and the relationship between the two main characters, Craig and The Gemini Killer.  I was also simultaneously frightened and drawn to the idea of having to perform a role almost entirely while tied down to a chair.  It was a fascinating study in reduction and subtlety that I hope is compelling.”

With The Gemini adopting multiple guises and personalities during his interrogation and torture of Craig, Cayleb told us of his preparation for the role, “We did some rehearsal early on and there were certain scenes or parts of scenes that we would rehearse in advance, but in many ways I got to meet each of Gemini’s personalities as the audience does.  It was really fun to explore.  I got to see (actor) Davis transform into these different characters, and then see how my character responded genuinely to each of these personalities in the moment.”

“Maintaining Craig’s strategic and desperate objective to escape, or to just stay alive, was the undercurrent for me,” Long expounded.  “My hope is that we slowly see Craig figure out what is happening along the way, and then work to take advantage of Bills various personalities and inconsistencies in any way (that) he can.”

As for the gory elements of ‘The Basement,’ “I knew that the FX and the graphic moments we’re going to be there, so I felt like it was really important to focus on the relationship between the two main characters, and the circumstance,” Long offered.  “It’s amazing (to me) the amount of time, effort and energy that goes into those FX moments, however.  I have so much respect for (FX artists) Juli Hapney and Ruthy Hernandez, and the whole FX crew.  They were so kind and easy to work with, and they put so much effort and care into making sure it looked good in order to tell the story well.”
