The Predator 2018

I was beyond excited when I heard that “The Predator” was written and directed by Shane Black. I have always been a fan of his work and I loved the fact he has history with the franchise. Black played Hawkins in the original “Predator” who provided most of the films comedy relief. It was obvious his comedic touch was going to be very prominent in “The Predator” but I was shocked by how hilarious this movie was. If I had to classify this movie I would describe it as the action movie version of a schlocky horror comedy ala “Evil Dead 2” or “House”. If you were expecting a tense thriller like the original film you are going to be very disappointed. If you love over the top gore, bizarre performances, frantic pacing and non-stop jokes, you will love this film! It is definitely not the direction I expected out of the franchise, but I am delighted that they went this way. I think the franchise has been stagnant for a long time, but after seeing “The Predator” I am once again engaged and interested in what might come next.

The Preator 2018

The movie starts with a bang and never slows down until the credits roll. From the first scene it is obvious that our hero, Army Ranger, Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) is a complete action movie badass, even when he is faced with a deadly unstoppable alien. Boyd Holbrook absolutely killed this role. He hasn’t really stood out to me before “The Predator” but I am a huge fan of his now. The entire cast was stellar. I really liked Casey’s (Olivia Munn) story arc in the film. She quickly goes from scientist to hard-ass when faced with danger and although not necessarily realistic, Munn’s performance was fantastic, and she completely sold it. Most of the characters were absolutely bizarre and over the top and all worked for the tone of the movie.

One of the major highlights for me in this movie was the gore. Aside from a couple of suspect looking CGI kills, the gore looked practical and extraordinary! There are some incredible kills in this movie that blew my mind. With the amount of gory movies I watch I am always thrilled when I see new and creative kills. The amount of blood and entrails this movie spills is astounding and I loved every second of it. This movie unforgivably kills so many people, to the point where some are literally killed just to get a laugh out of the audience. This was honestly refreshing to me. This brand of humor and carnage felt like
something that shouldn’t have come out in 2018, but I am glad that it did. My only complaint with the kills is the fact that one character is built up heavily throughout the movie and the kill was obscured by darkness. Several of the people I talked to after the movie didn’t even realize the character had died. That is a minor complaint though.

This movie is not going to be for everyone and that is ok. I wouldn’t call “The Predator” a great movie, but it was everything I wanted for an over the top violent, action gore fest. I laughed, I cheered and I came out of the theater absolutely hyped. I appreciate the obvious love for the franchise and the homages they scattered throughout. This is an extremely fun and creative entry into the mythos of the franchise. “The Predator” is back and bigger than ever, literally. I give “The Predator” 9 out of 10.
