Easily one of the most popular films in the history of horror, John Carpenter’s THE THING can also be described as one of his best. Even in the digital age of CGI, its practical effects wizardry holds up and even bests some films 35 years later. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know of the “blood test” scene, and it’s been paid homage in works such as “The X-Files” and “Stranger Things.” It was followed up by an Xbox game in 2002 and the “requel” starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 2011. Carpenter’s version became the benchmark for films that honed in on tension, claustrophobia, and paranoia. Have you ever wanted to capture that feeling in a game? Now’s your chance to get your copy of THE THING: INFECTION AT OUTPOST 31.
Art and collectible powerhouse Mondo is dipping its toes in the realm of board games with a collaboration with USAopoly’s designer games division, Project Raygun to bring us THE THING: INFECTION AT OUTPOST 31 Board Game. The joint effort seeks to meld art and cinema in a new way. Says Joe Van Wetering, Creative Design and Game Development at Project Raygun:
“Mondo brought more than their storied design acumen to the table. Thanks to their deep understanding and reverence for THE THING, they helped define the tone and shape the game play itself. INFECTION AT OUTPOST 31 reflects a true collaboration between our two brands resulting in a game that will excite tabletop and film aficionados alike.”
According to Mondo’s announcement on their website:
“An alien lifeform has infiltrated a bleak and desolate Antarctic research station assimilating other organisms and then imitating them. In the hidden identity game THE THING: INFECTION AT OUTPOST 31, you will relive John Carpenter’s sci-fi cult classic in a race to discover who among the team has been infected by this heinous lifeform. The game has been designed to be as authentically cinematic as possible, ensuring that the players will experience the paranoia and tension that makes the film so great.”
The regular edition of the game will release in retailers and online stores in October and will feature the artwork of Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative. They will also release a Mondo exclusive version, available only on MondoTees.com, which will feature different packaging artwork, a Mondo print, enamel pin and two additional sculpted movers. This version of the game will be limited to 1,982 copies (extra points if you get that reference.)
This will be a fantastic chance for film buffs and tabletop gamers alike to join together at the table and try to figure which of them is the infected lifeform that could take over the world, starting with them.
