Fans of FX’s American Horror Story are used to shocks, but today’s announcement isn’t one of them. Deadline reports that the network has picked the horror anthology up for an 8th and 9th season, adding to the already renewed seventh season of the series. FX CEO John Landgraf said of the renewals:
“American Horror Story launched the modern limited series revolution and – as evidenced by the most recent installment ‘Roanoke’ – it remains as vital today as when Murder House stunned audiences six years ago. Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot.”
Fox TV Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman also talked about the groundbreaking series that ushered in a new era of horror storytelling:
“When Ryan and Brad came to us seven years ago with the idea for a horror series structured as an anthology, with a group of actors returning year after year, in different roles, settings and time periods, we were in awe of the sheer originality and ambition of their vision.They’ve since delivered six fantastic installments which have rightfully attracted millions of viewers, critical raves and dozens of awards.”
Adding to the excitement is the early confirmation that series staples Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are already set to return for the seventh season. Season six saw Paulson playing three different roles, including a reprise of her season 2 character, and Peters playing two himself. While Lady Gaga’s return is in question due to a packed schedule in 2017, it is expected that most of the regular cast should return, though nothing has been officially announced as of yet. While stating that the new season would take place in modern times, he was careful to state that it continued to follow the tradition of being shrouded in secrecy, saying:
“There are only three people who know what season 7 is about,” said Murphy, “Dana Walden, John Landgraf and Sarah Paulson.”
The ever growing popularity of the show isn’t without its stumbling blocks and criticism. The most recent season took bold chances with both its marketing and format of the story, with mixed results. The unusual advertising campaign released a series of teasers of varying themes to leave the audience guessing as to the real story and setting of the season, only revealed at the beginning of the first episode. This left some burned out and bored, and others feeling slightly manipulated.
The format of last season’s American Horror Story: Roanoke saw a unique storytelling look into reality television and documentary shows. Told from the perspective of “real life” people being haunted, it played simultaneously with “reenactments” from a different set of actors. Also experimenting with different ideas, the show spun on its heels the second half of the season as it took both the actual participants and locked them in the haunted house with their actor counterparts.
Audiences were divided on whether they like both the story and the new formats, but there’s no doubt that the show will continue to try out new ideas and formats, working hard to continually keep viewers on their toes. Also in question, as it is each season, is the marketing approach they will take with the seventh season. Typically speaking they don’t usually repeat themselves and there was some backlash following the marketing campaign that was season six.
No release date has been set for FX’s “American Horror Story: Season 7” but we’ll be on the lookout for any news that drops, including new and returning stars and themes.
