Author Shirley Jackson will be getting the A-list treatment with the upcoming film Shirley starring Elizabeth Moss (The Invisible Man,The Handmaid’s Tale). Based on the book Shirley by Susan Scarf Merrill, the film is directed by Josephine Decker with script by Sarah Gubbins. Martin Scorcese is an executive producer on the film.
From the looks of the trailer, there are some strange things a-foot with a young woman– part of a married couple– that enters Shirley Jackson’s and Stanley Edgar Hyman’s life. Creepiness and dread abound, making this feature look worthy to portray, even fictionally, author Shirley Jackson who created such horror masterpieces as the novel The Haunting of Hill House and the short story, The Lottery.
Shirley has won the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Auteur Filmmaking. It also stars Michael Stuhlbarg (Men in Black 3, The Shape of Water) as the fictional Stanley Hyman, Shirley’s husband, with Odessa Young (the upcoming television remake of The Stand) and Logan Lerman (Amazon’s Hunters, the Percy Jackson films) playing Rose and Fred.
From the press release: Renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson is on the precipice of writing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her philandering husband. The middle-aged couple, prone to ruthless barbs and copious afternoon cocktails, begins to toy mercilessly with the naïve young couple at their door.
Shirley will be available on all major streaming platforms June 5th.
