Rainn Wilson is the latest actor to join the the Warner Bros. horror-thriller MEG.

Sharks became an enduring source of terror in films after JAWS sent swimmers scurrying to the shore in 1975, and now MEG will twist the concept with its tale of a massive prehistoric shark prowling the waters off of China.

Taking a key role in the film, Wilson (“The Office,” SUPER) joins a cast that includes Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER), Fan Bingbing (SKIPTRACE) and Ruby Rose (“Orange Is the New Black”).

MEG centers on a tech billionaire (Wilson) who spearheads an underwater observation program that unwittingly unleashes a 70-foot, 40-ton Carcharodon megalodon, which is a distant cousin of the great white.

Based on a novel by Steve Alten, MEG will be directed by Jon Turteltaub (NATIONAL TREASURE, THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE), who will work from a screenplay draft by Dean Georgaris (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) and a rewrite by James Vanderbilt (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2).

Audiences seeking another terror ride like JAWS may be disappointed, however. Turteltaub’s resume and Wilson’s comedy roots suggest MEG may deliver more thrills than horror.

Belle Avery, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Colin Wilson will produce the film, with Barrie M. Osborne, Wei Wayne Jiang, Gerald R. Molen and Randy Greenberg serving as executive producers.

Wilson has enjoyed numerous accolades for acting and earned three Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Emmy nominations. He has several upcoming films slated, including the comedy PERMANENT with Patricia Arquette and SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE.

Alten’s book, “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror,” was first published in 1997 and has spawned five sequels. Several failed attempts were made to adapt it into a film over the years with such directors as Jan de Bont, Guillermo Del Toro and Eli Roth attached.

MEG hits theaters March 2, 2018.
