HERE THEY LIE has been out since the PSVR launch but it has taken a significant amount of time to play and review properly. This is not because of an excessive length; it is due to the fact that it’s the only PSVR game to make me sick after every single play session. Motion sickness has been reported on a few titles, but honestly it hasn’t really been a problem for me until this one. I am not sure what it is about the controls and visual style but I had to break my time up with HERE THEY LIE into small 15 minute play sessions. That being said, you should absolutely check out the demo for this on the PSVR demo disk that comes with the headset. If the gameplay doesn’t bother you then HERE THEY LIE is a somewhat frightening experience that is worth checking out.
HERE THEY LIE is similar to games like OUTLAST and ALIEN ISOLATION, where the objective is basically survival and progression. This is an effective genre for VR due to the immersion and intensity of being hunted down and potentially murdered. The use of constant black and white environments tends to get dull after a while, but at times HERE THEY LIE manages to be interesting. The evolving city environment of this game is very unique for the horror genre. The Red-Light District was particularly memorable with the use of red lighting to highlight horrid bizarre acts on the street. The character design is indescribably off-putting yet comical at times. I am not quite sure if this was intentional or not. The story is interwoven throughout the game and it is told through letters and photographs, and it was interesting enough to keep me coming back between bouts of nausea.
I personally will never revisit HERE THEY LIE, but I am glad that I stuck through it once. The nausea inducing controls and mediocre graphics make it a struggle to appreciate what the game gets right. I would suggest this game over WEEPING DOLL but honestly I would stick with RUSH OF BLOOD or the RE 7 demo until some quality horror titles drop on the PSVR.
