Dave Made a Maze was a practical effects-heavy horror-comedy that a lot of us described as “the most jaw-droppingly original movie of 2017” (Roger’s Movie Nation). We think it deserves a viewing if you’ve never seen it and a re-viewing if you have. We’re convinced Dave Made A Maze will give you a little respite as you imagine your own novel ways to escape your reality.

Dave Made A Maze is funny and unpredictable. Dave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. Ignoring his warnings, Dave’s girlfriend Annie leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission. Once inside, they find themselves trapped in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.

Written by Steven Sears, produced by John Charles Meyer and starring Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, James Urbaniak, and Adam Busch, Bill Watterson’s feature debut re-imagines classic 80s adventure films with a modern comedic edge and a higher body count. To say it is a tour de force of practical effects is an understatement.

The handmade fantasy world comes to life with puppetry, stop-motion animation, and in-camera optical illusions. More than 30,000 square feet of donated/scrap cardboard was used in the creation of more than 20 unique sets.

Is it a horror movie? Why, yes! There’s blood…um, sort of. There’s scary parts, there’s tension, and there’s a Minotaur.

They definitely have a Minotaur.

See Dave Made A Maze with someone you love. It’s available in the US streaming, on dvd and on blu-ray and in the UK it’s available on blu-ray and streaming from Arrow Films.
